TimeLine Auctions: November 2022 Auction

Welcome to our fourth ancient art, antiquities and coin auction of 2022. Throughout November, objects are available to view by appointment at our Head Office in Harwich. Due to logistics, all auction days for this sale will be held at our headquarters in Harwich and there will be no reception on the eve of the sale.

This sale contains ‘treasures’ from many private collections, including that of an early 1970s Prehispanic and Stone Age collection from West Sussex; an important Parisian collection; as well as old stock from an important Mayfair gallery. These items are complemented by lots from the collections of several mudlarks and a range of fascinating objects selected from London’s ancient art galleries.

Every object in this sale has been inspected in person by members of a vetting committee, comprising more than ten archaeologists, specialists and antiquities professionals. The committee, which includes several professionals from other European countries, gathered this time on 10th-12th October 2022 to assess the selected lots with keen eyes to spot any potential forgeries or fakes. As a new feature for our TimeLine clients, each antiquity lot will be accompanied by an illustrated Lot Declaration which includes full cataloguing and provenance information. We have also enhanced our search engine which now enables clients to organise lots in six different ways.

The September sale was another international success with over 80% of lots offered being sold and acquisitions being made from 39 countries. Some of the star lots sold included: lot 58, the Egyptian Princess Figurine, sold for £9,750; lot 66 the Greek Kylix Eye-Cup, sold for £28,600; the Late Roman Military Eagle, sold for £33,800; the Byzantine Cosmatesque Mosaic Panel, sold for £28,600; lot 339, the Scythian Scale Armour Coat, sold for £13,000; lot 362, the Samurai Suit of Armour, sold for £11,700; and lot 401, the Medieval Statue of the Virgin and Child, sold for £12,350; all inc. bp.

We are pleased to announce that Professor Livio Zerbini has joined us as a consultant and as a full member of our vetting committee. Professor Zerbini holds a PhD in Roman history from the University of Toruń (2002), where he later worked as an associate professor of ancient history. In 2007, he was made professor of Roman history at the University of Ferrara’s Department of History and Classical Archaeology (Italy), where he founded the L.A.D. (laboratory of studies and research on Ancient Danubian Provinces). He is also the director of the Black Sea International Centre and researches at Batumi, Georgia.
